I still marvel at the impact reading THE ALCHEMIST made on me as a young teenager growing up in Australia. I’m beyond convinced that it set me on my course, magnetising me to come to Morocco and spend most of my adult life here. By memory, Morocco is never mentioned by name in the book, only city of Tangier. It seemed sooo exotic I assumed it was a fictional place used to set the scene of an era in some distant land.
When I had the opportunity to visit Morocco in 2003 for the first time, I didn’t even know where it was. I started searching the map around Lebanon and Turkey and traced my finger west past Egypt, til I found it, and thought WOW, I’m going to Africa!
But it wasn’t until I moved here, to a tiny coastal village near the city of Agadir, that I began to discover tales of treasure, the Sahara, omens and dreams for myself and they became part of my daily life. I remember the moment this realisation dawned on me as my life seemed to be merging with aspects of the book…
